What's In Our Products?
The basic function of toiletries is to cleanse, protect or condition the skin. To make this happen, producers need to add various ingredients. Click on an ingredient below to find out more:
Soaps help emulsify oils and hold them in suspension, so that dirt and grease can be washed away. Detergents are used in shampoos, shower gels and body washes, they are surfactants which means that they lower the surface tension of water, making it more able to interact with oil and grease, thus enabling impurities to be easily rinsed away.
However, strong detergents can strip away too much of the skin's natural protective oils, leaving it dry or irritated. When we formulate, we combine specially chosen plant based detergents so that they complement one another, giving an effective yet skin friendly cleansing action.
We don't use any petrochemical based detergent, neither do we use sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which can irritate the skin. Instead we use detergents made from plant-based ingredients that are effective, yet gentle on your skin.
Mineral oil (liquid paraffin) and petrolatum are derived from petroleum and cannot be synthesised by the skin. They block pores and diminish the skin ability to function.
We never use petroleum-based ingredients, choosing instead plant-based oils, which can be similar in content to the skins own sebum. Rich in vitamins, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids, they are easily and safely absorbed, assisting the skins natural functions and helping improve its condition.
Unlike food, we don’t keep our toiletries in the fridge, which means preservatives may be needed to keep them fresh. Often used to preserve conditional skin care, parabens can cause allergic reactions and have been reported to have an estrogenic reaction.
We never use parabens. Instead we use natural ingredients with preservative properties, such as rose or propolis extract.
In some cases, to offer you a particular shelf life, we use small amounts of preservatives selected to be safe for use and non-persistent in the environment.
The packaging we use is chosen for its protective properties, so that we can minimise preservatives. Our trademark blue glass bottles, for instance, were specially chosen as they cut down 97% of UV light.
Silicones are used to create a silky feel to the skin or hair, but they can create a plastic like wrap, disrupting the skins ability to release toxins, trapping irritants onto the skin and blocking the pores. They are also non-biodegradable. They may be listed as cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethicone copolyol etc
Synthetic colours used by conventional toiletries manufacturers can have harmful side effects and may irritate the skin.
We don’t use any synthetic colourants. If we want extra colour, we’ll use natural ingredients, choosing nutrient rich avocado or pumpkin seed oil to lend a vibrant green hue, or rosehip or calendula oils to bring a golden orange.
The word ‘parfum’ in an ingredient listing can make a hidden multitude of synthetic chemicals, which are the major cause of allergic responses.
We don’t use any of them. With the boundless array of wonderful scents available from nature, we fragrance our products
with plant essence not only chosen for their delightful aromas, but also for their therapeutic properties.
